TRIUMPH: TRAUMA-BASED REHAB PROGRAM

At Elan, we understand the impact and trauma can have on one’s life. For individuals needing trauma informed care approach for their treatment and have identified trauma in their history, Triumph is available.

Psychological trauma is usually caused by an overwhelming event that exceeds one’s ability to cope. Stress from an emotional incident or a threat to life or bodily integrity can be a source of trauma, including sexual assault, violence, death of a close friend or relative, and more. The individual may be unable to process his or her own feelings or stay in the present moment. Trauma varies from one individual to another and is a distinct and subjective experience.

Physical or emotional trauma puts many individuals at a higher risk for abusing licit, illicit, and prescription drugs. Some individuals may believe that using drugs and/or alcohol will help them cope with their trauma. Emotional or physical trauma may also cause those with existing drug or alcohol related problems to continue use or begin using again. Individuals suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder are also at an increased risk of abusing drugs or alcohol. The National Center for PTSD Research Quarterly (Fall 1996) reviewed studies that suggest that 60-80% of treatment seeking individuals with PTSD also met criteria for a substance use disorder.

This program follows SAMHSA's six key principles for trauma-informed care:

  • Safety
  • Trustworthiness and Transparency
  • Peer Support
  • Collaboration and Mutuality
  • Empowerment, Voice, and Choice
  • Cultural, Historic, and Gender Issues

Our clinicians are trained and experienced to recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in an individual. Interventions are focused on empowerment to resolve underlying issues without retraumatizing through evidence-based treatments such as but not limited to: cognitive behavioral therapy, shame resilience and vulnerability training, and rational emotive behavioral therapy.
